Single Cycle IVF PGD Program

Single IVF Embryo Cycle with Trophoblast Biopsy
  • The patient is given medications to stimulate egg production and undergoes a fresh IVF cycle
  • All eggs produced during the cycle are inseminated to create embryos for the patient
  • The embryos are cultured and grown to blastocyst stage, approximately 5 to 7 days
  • During the biopsy, several cells are removed from each embryo using microscopic guidance
  • After biopsy, the blastocysts (embryos) are frozen as it will not be possible to obtain PGD results in sufficient time to perform a fresh embryo transfer
  • The cells are sent to a specialty laboratory where the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) will be completed
  • A report will be provided to Virginia IVF stating the genetic defects, if any, of each blastocyst (embryo)
  • At a later time, the patient will return to Virginia IVF for a frozen embryo transfer
  • A chosen number of blastocysts (embryos), without genetic defects, are transferred to the patient
  • Benefits and Considerations
  • The patient is able to file with insurance for reimbursement for part or all of the services, depending on coverage
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is always used as the insemination method
  • All embryos will be frozen, requiring a frozen embryo transfer
  • Several (2-5) cells are taken from each embryo for genetic analysis which increases the accuracy of the genetic testing
  • Because all the blastocysts (embryos) must be frozen and thawed for embryo transfer at a later time, there is a possibility that some of the embryos will not survive the thawing process
